London, March 30 (IANS) English football forward Michael Owen's international career is in jeopardy after national team manager Fabio Capello said he would not pick players based on 'history.'
Despite suffering a series of injury setbacks to his leading strikers, Capello has chosen to ignore the claims of Owen.
After a miserable run of injuries, Owen was dropped for Newcastle's home defeat by Arsenal last Saturday and has yet to prove his fitness.
'I choose the best players to play against Ukraine, not against history,' Capello, was quoted as saying in Daily Telegraph.
'Owen played only 20 minutes in his last game. You have to choose the players who've played a lot of games. It's impossible to choose one player that played only 20 minutes.
'Why didn't he play longer in the last game? Because he was dropped. So I have to choose the players in good form.
'If Michael plays three or four games in the future, he'll be with us.'
