While addressing an election meeting here on Friday, Union minister for Information and Broadcasting and senior Congress leader Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi said: ??BJP stalwart Atal Bihari Vajpayee??s becoming the prime minister of the country has been unfortunate.
''The Congress has a rich history of leaders committed to serving the nation...but what about the BJP's ancestors. May be their stalwarts hold the reply. Vajpayee may think and then admit that during his youth, he testified in an Agra court against other youth giving the call of Quit India in 1942,'' Dasmunsi said.
As in the past Congress leaders alleged that former prime minister identified youth involved in giving call of Quit India in Batehwar, Agra. ??Vajpayee himself will admit that he identified the youth,? Dasmunsi claimed. He equated the leadership of Vajpayee with an unfortunate incident.
Dasmunsi hailed Congress President by saying that she followed the rich legacy of Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, who sacrificed their lives for nation by sacrificing the post of Prime Minister only to be among the people.
Reacting sharply to Dasmunsi's statements former Union Minister and BJP leader Sushma Swaraj said: ''Atalji??s becoming India's PM was fortunate for the nation. Instead of digging up old issues like the Bateshwar episode during the election, Congress needs to debate the matter nationally.''
| 1. | The Bateswar issue mentioned by Priyo da is irrelevent in the context of developing the nation. Priyo da should take note that what Vajpayee did at that time was the right thing to do as a law abiding citizen. Discussing whether he should have suppported the Quit India movement is a irrelevent matter, and bringing up Nehru and Indira Gandhi and Rajiv are just a waste of time. These people are dead and gone and the country has been lagging behind in every respect. Whoever is in power, or comes to power should look to the future instead of the past and develop the country to its full potential. The politicians are just wasting the window of opportunity that has opened for India. | Tathagata Chatterjee 2008-04-22 |
