Varun Gandhi may court arrest today
As the anticipatory bail application of BJP leader Varun Gandhi expires today for his alleged communal speech in Pilibhit constituency, he has reportedly decided not to move for appeal in the Supreme Court.
According to sources, he may court arrest in his constituency and the Bharatiya Janata Party in that case would like to present him as a political martyr. If he withdraws his anticipatory bail application, the UP police will have no legal bar in arresting him.
Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court will today hear Varun’s bail plea. On March 20, the court had granted anticipatory bail to Varun on a personal bond of 50,000 rupees.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Allahabad High Court had already dismissed Varun's plea seeking quashing of an FIR filed against him for his alleged anti-Muslims remarks.
He claimed that the entire video tape, showing him delivering inflammatory remarks, has been doctored and in no case he has delivered any such remarks. The Election Commission had, however, found him guilty and on its directive the UP police had lodged a criminal case, charging him of violating the Model Code of Conduct for elections by making communal remarks.
Following the notice of EC, the Pilibhit police filed a FIR under Sections 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups on ground of religion) and 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by a public servant) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 125 of the Representation of the People Act.
