Alaska volcano spewing ash over Anchorage

Americas, Fri, 27 Mar 2009 IANS

San Francisco, March 27 (DPA) Alaska's Mount Redoubt volcano erupted twice Thursday, sending razor-sharp ash over the city of Anchorage.

The second eruption reached a height of around 20 km, following an eruption earlier Thursday that sent a plume of ash about nine kilometres high, the Alaska Volcano Observatory said.

The volcano, roughly 160 km southwest of Anchorage, last erupted during a four-month period in 1989-90.

The ash is not expected to fall to the ground in Anchorage, the National Weather Service said.
