Crispy Duck to go off the menu in Britain

Tue, 01 Jan 2008 ANI

London, July 21 (ANI): Brits will no longer get to savour their favourite Chinese dish of Crispy Duck - as ovens used to prepare the dish do not comply with EU safety standards.

The ban came after inspectors sealed ovens traditionally used to prepare the speciality because they said they did not comply with Brussels safety standards.

The ban is likely to hit more than 100 restaurants. Ten in London and some of the celebs' favourites in Chinatown, have already been affected.

"We are not picking on the Chinese community. This can be an issue with any kind of ethnic type of food," Daily Star quoted a Westminster Council spokesman, as saying.

The 600-year-old delicacy was traditionally eaten at feasts and is now usually served with pancakes, spring onions and cucumber.

"It's absurd. What do the Europeans know about making Chinese duck? It's just as outrageous as people in Hong Kong being told they can't make fish and chips," said Top chef Ken Hom.

One restaurant affected is Phoenix Place, a favourite among politicians including Tony Blair.

"Our hands are tied. There's nothing we can do except apologise for a mistake we didn't make." said Manager Victor Hor. (ANI)
