London, July 21 (ANI): In what is touted to be the biggest art collection ever to go under the hammer, masterpieces collected by the late Yves Saint Laurent are expected to fetch almost 250m pounds after being sold early next year.

Many of the catwalk creations by the French fashion icon, who died last month were inspired by his collection that adorned the works by Picasso, Matisse, Mondrian, Léger, Brancusi and de Chirico.

Being sold by Pierre Berge, Saint Laurent's business partner and companion, his prestigious art-collection will be auctioned by Christie's in February in Paris's Grand Palais.

Laurent's collection also includes ancient Roman works, Renaissance statues, paintings by Ingres, Goya and Warhol, art deco furniture and silver.

Though Christie's did not reveal much about the collection, it is claimed to be "simply extraordinary, one of the most beautiful art collections in the world" by an expert, reports The Times Online.

While the auction will be held in association with Berge's own auction house, Pierre Berge and Associates, the proceeds of the sale will go to the Paris foundation created by Saint Laurent and Berge to preserve his work. (ANI)
