Congress to contest 37 seats in Bihar

New Delhi, Sat, 21 Mar 2009 ANI

New Delhi, Mar 21 (ANI): The Congress Party on Saturday announced that it will contest 37 of the 40 seats in Bihar, leaving only three seats for the Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP).

"We have decided to contest 37 seats in Bihar. We want to leave three seats, two on which Lalu Prasad would contest and one on which Ram Vilas Paswan would contest," senior Congress leader Sushil Kumar Shinde told reporters here.

Shinde, who is the chairman of the screening committee in Bihar, informed that he would be sending a list of names (seats) to the party's Central Election Committee for approval.

He revealed that Congressmen were extremely upset over the Lalu-Paswan seat-sharing agreement and "their dissatisfaction was at such a level that it was getting difficult to convince them."

Lalu Yadav and Ram Vilas Paswan had on March 17 unilaterally announced 25 and 12 seats respectively for themselves, leaving just three seats for the Congress.

The Congress, however, said the deal was unacceptable.

In the previous general election, the UPA had bagged 29 seats in the state, while the JD (U)-BJP combine had 11. The RJD's tally was 22, while the LJP could only win four.

The 2009 general elections in Bihar would happen in four phases. The first phase is scheduled on April 16, second on April 22 and 23, third on April 30 and fourth on May 7. (ANI)
