The electronic media has televised the episode and then the entire country went into shock by watching the incident in their television screen that looks as if it occurred somewhere in Taliban.
Soon after the incident it was obvious for the NHRC to act and hence it seeks report from the Bihar government about this police brutality. On Tuesday morning a chain snatcher named Salim was first thrashed by locals and then handed over to police who later dragged him by a police vehicle. The police personnel who is later suspended by the authority is a sub-inspector who dragged Salim until he fail unconscious and later sent to the hospital with on a trolley just like an animal.
It is ironic that the police person who was totally aware of the presence of the media didn’t even bother to stop this nonsense act in front of the entire country. Certainly he was feeling pride of doing so and also being a police he might have thought it is his right to violate anyone’s right as most of them do believe so.
Again the live audience, the locals, watched this incident without directing the police to take the man into custody instead of acting such vicious manner. Though now the people do blame the police for the entire incident.
The incident soon took a political turn as the opposition RJD raised the issue of safety and security of minority Muslims in the state as the victim is a Muslim. Such incident can certainly make the matter even worse with communal feelings. The administration has also ordered a high level probe keeping in mind the 1989 Bhagalpur riot.
Meanwhile, the state government has suspended those two officers on action but is this right manner to show aggression by the people of our society. Again this is a clear case of police brutality and human rights violence. There is still a long way to go before all human beings have effective access to the right. Then the government and we as a whole need to take firm stand instead of being a mute audience, as we did in this case.
