Y.V. Reddy, the governor of Reserve Bank of India has been awarded an honorary fellowship by The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) for his sincere contribution in the field of upgrading the underprivileged.

Lord Stern of Brentford, current holder of IG Patel chair, who conferred the honour to Dr. Reddy praised Dr. Reddy for his commitment underlying his various achievements and tasks.

"Dr Reddy is an outstanding individual who has distinguished himself through his knowledge, service and commitment not only to India but to the wider global community. We are honoured that he is accepting an honorary fellowship at the School,” Lord Stern said.

“He is described as the governor who has the courage to implement policies which are fair and for the benefit of all people, motivated by strong principles of economic management and constantly recognising the needs of poor people. He has been recognised as a leader who is firm, flexible and fair and well respected by all his staff," Lord Stern said.

Reedy is traditionally known as nuts-n-bolts man but he is the one who never loses sight out of the big picture. His greatest strength is his independence. Those who know him well say he does not soft-peddle issues.

Prior to his appointment as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, Dr. Reddy has served a six-year tenure with the Reserve Bank of India as its Deputy Governor. Appointed on September 14, 1996 for a period of five years, his term as the Deputy Governor was extended for two more years from September 2001.

Dr. Reddy graduated from Vivekananda college in Chennai and took his M.A. in economics from the Madras University, later completing his Ph.D from the Osmania University; and Diploma in Economic Planning from the Institute of Social Studies, Netherlands. Dr. Reddy was awarded Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) by Sri Venkateswara University, India; and Doctor of Civil Law (Honoris Causa) by the University of Mauritius.
