Re-election for President in Nepal to be held tomorrow

Tue, 01 Jan 2008 ANI

Kathmandu, July 20 (ANI): The re-election of the President in Nepal would be held on Monday as none of the candidates vying for the post could garner a clear majority of 298 votes.

The two front runner presidential candidates are Dr. Ram Baran Yadav of the Nepali Congress and Ram Raja Prasad Singh of the communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (CPN-M).

Out of 578 votes cast, Nepali Congress candidate Dr. Yadav bagged 283 votes, 15 votes less than he required to win. His closest contestant, Ram Raja Prasad Singh, secured 270 votes.

"As per clause 36 (B)2 of the Interim Constitution, none of the candidates bagged a clear majority to win, so I have fixed Monday for a run-off poll between the two top candidates," Kantipur quoted Constituent Assembly chairman Kul Bahadur Gurung, as saying after the CA meeting. (ANI)
