Two leopard skins seized in Dehradun
New Delhi, March 18 (IANS) Two leopard skins were allegedly seized Wednesday from a person in Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand.
The accused in Vasant Vihar area of Dehradun was arrested, Wildlife Protection Society of India (WPSI), an NGO, said in a statement.
The main accused, belonging to the Chamoli district of the state, and another partner are absconding, the statement said.
Some two years ago, the accused poisoned a mule that was preyed by the leopards. Later they skinned the cats and stored their skins for sale on a later date, the NGO said.
The operation was conducted jointly by the Special Task Force (STF) of the Uttarakhand Police Department and the WPSI.
In 2009 alone, 39 leopard skins were seized by enforcement agencies from different parts of the country, WPSI said.
Leopards are protected by the Wildlife (Protection) Act of India 1972.
