Bangalore, March 18 (IANS) An Indian Police Service (IPS) officer in Karnataka is under the scanner for alleged corruption, the state ombudsman said Wednesday.
The ombudsman, N. Santosh Hegde, a former judge of the Supreme Court, told reporters here that his office had received information 'from Delhi and Mumbai that Hemant Nimbalkar has assets exceeding Rs.250 crore (Rs.2.5 billion). We are still searching. The final tally of his assets is yet to be made.
'The officer had Rs.25 lakh (Rs.2.5 million) income since joining service in 1998 and so far his assets have been valued at Rs.76 lakh (Rs.7.6 million),' Hegde said.
The 1998 Karnataka cadre IPS officer is now working with the state anti-terrorism squad. He has worked as superintendent of police of Belgaum and Chikmagalur districts earlier.
Nimbalkar has two flats in his wife's name at Dadar, Mumbai, Hegde said.
However, the flats could not be searched as Nimbalkar's wife, doing her post-graduation in medicine, was out appearing for an examination, he said.
Hegde said he will seek the help of central government agencies to unearth assets owned by Nimbalkar, who hails from Kolhapur in Maharashtra.
The ombudsman also raided the houses of four other state officials, including an executive engineer in the Public Works Department (PWD), and found assets worth around Rs.5 crore (Rs.50 million), Hegde said.
