Adun (Uttarakhand), Mar 17(ANI): Over eight months ago, Alpha Foundation, a voluntary forum instituted an exclusive school for slum children at Dehradun in Uttarakhand.
Indeed, this was much before the movie 'Slumdog Millionaire' could hit the headlines by winning Oscar awards.
And today, the students of this school are keen to emulate the deeds of the character from that movie in their real life.
The initiative of Alpha Foundation and its volunteers has resulted in the poor children from the slums of Dehradun regularly attending school and learn the basic of academics.
So much so, these children who otherwise would have been loitering around as rag pickers or taken up jobs at a tender age, now even speak and sing rhymes in English.
The movie 'Slumdog Millionaire' have set high aspirations for, these slum children.
Alpha Foundation set up this school named Alpha Centre for Learning (ACL) in July 2008 with an aim to transform the lives of the slum dwellers.
Initially, the school had just 25 children. Soon the number increased and today this school boasts of 262 tiny scholars from the slums.
"We wanted to show them the path and bring out their hidden talents so that they can earn a living in the society and lead a life with dignity," said Lt Col (retired) S K Jairath, Chief Administrative Officer, Alpha Foundation, Dehradun.
Children from the economically and socially backward sections of the society and whose parents have no means to educate them are now nurturing big dreams.
"I want to study and become a big man someday. I have seen the movie 'Slumdog Millionaire', wherein how a boy from the slums, a rag picker, goes on to become a millionaire by answering all the questions," said Shabaz, a student, ACL, Dehradun.
Apart from providing free education and mid-day meals to the slum children, the school also provides vocational training and periodically holds health camps. y Ashish Goel (ANI)
