Elephant triggers panic in Uttar Pradesh

National, Tue, 17 Mar 2009 IANS

Lucknow, March 17 (IANS) An elephant has triggered panic in an Uttar Pradesh village after killing two people and injuring four in the last 10 days, an official said Tuesday.

The elephant trampled a young man to death Monday evening in Nagraganja village of Basti district, 250 km from here.

The incident took place in a crowded market when the elephant picked up the man who was standing at a shop and trampled him to death.

'For about an hour, the elephant stood on the youth, who died on the spot. The elephant belongs to a resident Ram Jiwavan of the village,' sub-divisional forest officer Manoj Khare told IANS on phone.

'As the elephant has become a threat for the locals, we will take it in our possession to know why the animal is behaving in the manner of a rogue,' he said.

According to forest officials, the same elephant killed a five-year-old boy 10 days ago.
