Agra, March 16 (IANS) Private doctors here continued to stay away from work for the second day Monday even as authorities ordered an inquiry against the policemen who allegedly manhandled a senior doctor.
The deputy inspector general of police and divisional commissioner ordered a preliminary inquiry Sunday afternoon after private medical practitioners struck work Saturday-Sunday midnight protesting alleged police atrocities.
They are demanding firm action against the three policemen who, they claim 'went berserk and ill-treated Munishwar Gupta'.
Gupta, director of the Kamayani Hospital here, was allegedly manhandled and dragged away from his office by the police Saturday afternoon. He was released later.
Most private nursing homes and pathological laboratories in the city stayed closed Monday, while the junior doctors in the S.N. Medical College were sporting black bands as a mark of protest.
'If the administration failed to initiate action against the erring police officials, emergency services in the hospitals would also be stopped,' president of Indian Medical Association's Uttar Pradesh unit Nirmal Chopra said Sunday.
The city's medical services have been badly hit and there appears little likelihood of an early settlement as the whole dispute has taken a political hue ahead of the elections.
On Sunday, Ramapati Tripathi, president of the Utar Pradesh unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party, had alleged: 'there had been a big deal at the highest level to initiate police action against Munishwar.'
The Congress party as also a dozen professional bodies and business chambers have criticised the police action and demanded firm action against the policemen.
