Bangladesh to modernise fire service

Bangladesh, Sat, 14 Mar 2009 IANS

Dhaka, March 14 (Xinhua) A day after a major fire at the country's largest shopping mall, Bangladesh Saturday said it would soon mordenise its fire brigade to tackle any such terrible fire in the future.

After visiting the injured in a hospital here, Bangladesh's Home Minister Sahara Khatun told reporters the fire brigade would be provided high-tech equipment and training for fire fighters to deal with such tragedies in the future.

'The prime minister has asked to set up fire brigade office in each sub-district and procure necessary equipment speedily,' Khatun said.

Fire fighters were seen helpless Friday in extinguishing the flames on top floors of the 19-storey Bashundhara City shopping complex in Dhaka, as they had no ladder or equipment to put out a blaze beyond the 13th floor.

It took seven to eight hours for them to completely douse the fire that gutted several shopping units between 19th and 12th floor, killing seven people and injuring a dozen others.

Director General of Fire Service and Civil Defence Brigadier General Abu Nayeem Shahidullah blamed the lack of equipment for the delay in the rescue operation.

The government Friday formed an inquiry committee to probe the fire incident.
