National, Sat, 14 Mar 2009 IANS

Lucknow, March 14 (IANS) A 70-year-old labourer was burnt to death in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district, police said Saturday.

Nahar Singh was set on fire Friday night while he was alone in his house in Kandhla village of Muzaffarnagar, 350 km from here.

The incident appears to be a fallout of a dispute between the victim and some landlords in the village, police Inspector R.N. Pareshar told IANS on phone.

He said family members of the victim alleged that Nahar Singh was set ablaze on the directions of the landlords.

According to police, Nahar Singh had an altercation with the landlords last week.

'At present, we have registered a case against unidentified miscreants. An inquiry has been initiated and necessary action will be taken after the completion of the inquiry,' Superintendent of Police (Rural) Raju Babu said.
