Supreme Court upholds new recruitment in Nepal Army

Kathmandu, Sat, 14 Mar 2009 ANI

Kathmandu, March 14 (ANI): The Supreme Court (SC) of Nepal on Friday upheld the fresh recruitments of around 3,000 soldiers in the Nepal Army (NA).

The apex court announced that the new recruits should not be stopped as they have already received appointment letters.

With the new development, the interim order issued earlier by the Supreme Court to halt fresh enlistment in the Nepal Army will be nullified. However, the Supreme Court has issued an interim order to stop new recruitment.

A full bench comprising justices Ram Prasad Shrestha, Khil Raj Regmi and Girish Chandra Lal passed the verdict.

The full bench, however, upheld the recruitment of some 3000 personnel in Army, stating that the recruitment procedure, which completed before the writ was registered, could not be invalidated.

The interim order said that the nature of recruitment in the Army as per the vacancy call made on November 2 is not clear.

INHURED International, a human rights group, had filed the writ at the Supreme Court on February 17, challenging the Nepali Army's recruitment process.

INHURED has filed a similar writ at the SC against the recruitment recently opened by Maoist People's Liberation Army (PLA). The court had on March 8 issued interim order to the PLA to stop the recruitment process, Nepalnews reports (ANI)
