CPI (M) Central Committee meeting today

Tue, 01 Jan 2008 ANI

New Delhi, July 19 (ANI): The CPI (M)'s Central Committee will meet in the Capital today to chalk out its future strategy in the prevailing political turmoil. Only yesterday, the party had issued a three-line whip to their Members of Parliament to be present in the Lok Sabha on July 21 and 22.

During the two-day meet, the Committee will hold discussion on the decisions taken by the Politburo, including the talks the top CPI (M) leadership has been holding with several political leaders like Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati and others.

On Friday, the CPI (M) asked 43 of its MPs to vote against the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government. The party also asked them to reach New Delhi on July 20 and to be present in Parliament on the following two days.

Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee has not been served with a whip.

The government believes it has enough votes to avoid an early election after securing the backing of the Samajwadi Party (SP). But, observers say the trust vote could turn out to be close.

If the government loses, early elections will be called and the Indo-US nuclear deal with the US, over which the government's communist allies withdrew support, could be buried.

To win the trust vote, the government needs to reach the 272 mark in the 545-member lower house of parliament. (ANI)
