Lok Sabha reserved seats increased to 131
After the delimitation of the Lok Sabha constituencies, the total number of reserved seats has been revised to 131 while the number of the total seats remained unchanged at 543. The revised figure has been put after recalculation of population of Scheduled Castes and Tribes.
Number of constituencies allocated for Scheduled Castes have increased from 79 to 84 and number of seats reserved for Scheduled Tribes has increased from 41 to 47. The reservation is done vide provision contained in Article 330 of the Constitution of India read with Section 3 of the R. P. Act, 1950.
In the forthcoming general elections, the number of electors has increased about 6.4 percent, almost 43 million more, from the last Lok Sabha polls in 2004. The total eligible voters, 71,42,87,814 will use 10.5 lakh electronic voting machines to exercise their franchise at 8.3 lakh polling stations.
As per the latest released government data, Uttar Pradesh with 80 parliamentary constituencies has the highest number of electors that is 116,424,101 while Lakshadweep (1 MP) has only 44,424 electors.
Uttar Pradesh also possesses the largest constituency with Unnao 18,97,474 electors while Lakshadweep will remain the smallest constituency.
The Election Commission has announced to place around 1800 observers to keep a close vigil on the elections which is going to start on April 16 and continue till May 13 spreading over five phases across the country.
