Ugandan footballer's body to be flown home Thursday

Europe, Wed, 11 Mar 2009 IANS

Kolkata, March 11 (IANS) The body of Ugandan footballer Alex Katete, who died after a heart attack in Silchar in West Bengal eight days back, would be flown to his country Thursday, a senior official said Wednesday.

Kolkata football team George Telegraph player Katete died after a heart attack March 3 morning, hours after his first match in India in the second division I-League.

The 24-year-old Ugandan's body, brought to Kolkata March 4, has now been kept embalmed at a city mortuary.

'Sending the body of a foreigner to his home country is a cumbersome process. We have finally managed to complete all the formalities. His body will be flown to Kampala Thursday by an Emirates Airlines flight,' All India Football Federation (AIFF) vice-president Subrata Dutta said here Wednesday.

After many efforts, George Telegraph officials managed to contact Katete's family members in Uganda, who wanted the body to be sent to them.

'We had to go through a lot of procedures. We needed clearances from the civic authorities, the police, several other government departments, and the Ugandan high commission in Delhi,' Dutta, also the general secretary of George Telegraph, told IANS.

He said initially the Ugandan high commission was not of much help, but changed their attitude during the last few days.
