Indian woman killed in Melbourne had just applied for Oz citizenship
Melbourne, Mar.11 (ANI): An Indian woman, who was killed in an alleged hit-run accident last night, had just applied for permanent residency in Australia, the Herald Sun reports.
Thirty-three-year-old Aman Preet Sanhotra died when a B-double truck hit her at the corner of Melbourne's Broadhurst Avenue and High St, Reservoir, about 10.40 p.m.
The woman's cousin, Gagandeeb Singh, said she was just five minutes from home when the accident happened.
He said she was returning home from dropping a friend off at Ruthven train station.
He said friends and family became aware she was missing when the alarm on the mobile phone she had left at home went off at 4 a.m.
Her family went into her room and discovered she wasn't there.
He said the family was trying to have the woman's body returned to India.
"She was a lovely girl. She helped everyone. I don't know how we can tell her parents in India," he said.
A man has been charged for the hit-and-run mishap, reports The Age.
The 45-year-old man from Yarroweyah was charged this morning with failing to stop and failing to render assistance. He has been bailed to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday. (ANI)
