Govt. directs IIMs and IITs to start admission without OBC quota

April 27: Clearing the uncertainty clouds the government has permitted the Central Institutions of Higher Education to go ahead with their admission procedure. While declaring it the HRD Minister Arjun Singh said that the government is committed in bringing OBC reservation in to effect and hence will go for all possible constitutional and legal measures in this regard.

The centre showed the green signal to all 65 Central government funded institutions, including IIMs and IITs to start their admission procedure as general, SC and ST categories for the coming academic session without the OBC quota for the time being. That would indeed be according to the previous norms. Which means no admission would be conducted for the extended seats of OBC.

On Thursday, the HRD minister called for a meeting with the UPA allies and decided to make the IIMs free to start their admission for all 1,350 seats for General, SC and ST candidates. However, the extended seats for the admission of OBC category would only come into effect after the decision of Supreme Court that is set to come on 8th May.

If the Supreme Court lifts the stay on OBC reservation, then the purposed number of extended seats for OBC can be filled after the apex courtâ??s decision. Thus, for IIMs the number of extended seats would be 157 and 1,788 seats in IITs.
