Oasis' debut concerts in China cancelled over 'Free Tibet' campaign link

London, March 3 (ANI): English rock band 'Oasis' have been banned from performing in China owing to their link with the 'Free Tibet' campaign.

The Chinese Government is said to have revoked the band's performance licences, and cancelled the two concerts they were to stage in Beijing and Shanghai in April.

The promoters of the shows say that a decision to cancel them was taken after the Government realised that the group's frontman Noel Gallagher had appeared at a 'Free Tibet' benefit gig in the U.S. in 1997.

"The Government deemed that the band are unsuitable to perform to their fans in the Chinese Republic," Sky News quoted the promoters as saying.

Oasis have expressed their disappointment at the move.

Issuing a statement, the band said: "The Chinese authorities' action in cancelling these shows marks a reversal of their decision regarding the band which has left both Oasis and the promoters bewildered."

The Chinese Government is said to have decided to take firm steps to control foreign singers following the shouting of "Tibet! Tibet!" by Icelandic pop star Bjork during her Shanghai concert last year. (ANI)
