Patel streeses on air connectivity to smaller and remote towns

Pakyong (Sikkim), Feb 28 (ANI): Union Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel has acknowledged the need for better air connectivity to ensure economic development of remote areas like Sikkim.

 

Addressing a gathering after performing the Bhumi Pujan for proposed airport at Pakyong near Gangtok in Sikkim on Saturday, he said that air connectivity would facilitate transportation of tourist as well as agricultural and horticultural products of hill states to national and international markets.

 

Patel assured that priority is being accorded to providing air connectivity to smaller and remote towns

 

Sikkim Governor B.P. Singh and Chief Minister Pawan Chamling were also present on the occasion.

 

The proposed airport is likely to be constructed within two years at a cost of around 310 crore rupees.

 

The new airport would have the capacity to handle two ATR 72 type aircraft at a time each having capacity of 50 passengers.

 

The first ever airport of Sikkim is expected to open new avenues in promotion of trade and tourism in the state. (ANI)
