More security for Indian team in New Zealand after bottle throwing incident

Wellington, Sat, 28 Feb 2009 ANI

Wellington, Feb.28 (ANI): New Zealand Cricket (NZC) will increase on ground security for the upcoming one day matches against India, after a bottle was thrown onto the field during last night's Twenty20 international in Wellington.

Play was halted briefly towards the end of the New Zealand innings after a plastic bottle was thrown from the crowd on to the ground close to Indian fast bowler Zaheer Khan.

NZC chief executive Justin Vaughan said concerns over the incident were expressed by the Indian team and by match referee Ranjan Madugalle.

Vaughan said steps were already under way to provide increased security for the five-match ODI series, which begins at McLean Park, Napier, on Tuesday March 3.

Measures would include more security staff, higher security visibility in potential problem areas, and closer monitoring and awareness of the crowd.

Security staff would also be instructed to take extra precautions to shield boundary fielders, and to take prompt action against offenders. Additional measures would be considered. (ANI)
