Bangladesh mutiny an internal matter: India

New Delhi, Thu, 26 Feb 2009 ANI

New Delhi, Feb 26 (ANI): Terming the ongoing mutiny by paramilitary forces in Bangladesh as an "internal matter" of that country, External Affairs Ministry spokesman Vishnu Prakash on Thursday expressed confidence that the Bangladesh Government would resolve the issue amicably.

Commenting on the situation on the Indo-Bangla border, the spokesman said, "The area is safe and secure."

Meanwhile, Home Minister P Chidambaram has also assured that there are no threats emancipating along the 4,095-km long India-Bangladesh border.

"Our borders are secure. Our BSF is on the alert. I don't think the BDR-Army dispute in Bangladesh will spill over to our border," he said.

The mutiny in Bangladesh's Dhaka broke out at about 9 a.m. on Wednesday following an altercation between army officers and BDR personnel over the formers' pay and perks, conditions of service and other facilities, which they alleged, were discriminatory.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in an urgent bid to end the crisis, which has reportedly killed 50 people, has warned the BDR troops to lay down their arms or face "tough action." (ANI)
