"Who wants to be millionaire?" touched millions and millions of hearts with unexpected bliss and delight and reached Indians on cloud nine for the first time as the movie Slumdog Millionaire scripted history for India in golden letters on the red carpet of Oscar- the annual Hollywood awards.
When people in India were either having bed tea or preparing to go to office this morning, Slumdog Millionaire was creating history overseas making Indian film industry recognition on the global movie platform.
Slumdog Millionaire's rags-to-riches drama bagged "eight" out of 24 significant awards of which it was nominated for ten categories.
Having won the three Golden Globe and the seven BAFTA awards, the Oscars represented the final lap in Slumdog's race for recognition where it surpassed the earlier two in the number of awards and bagged eight of them.
Music maestro A R Rahman, the Mozart of Madras , has become the first Indian composer to scoop an Oscar after winning two Academy Awards-Best Score and Best Song-for his outstanding work in the Slumdog Millionaire.
The elated Rahman while on dais after receiving the award recalled one of the famous Bollywood dialogues - Mere Paas Ma Hai, which means even if I have nothing I have mother here - the Oscar.
The movie is about "optimism and the power of hope," says excited and thrilled Rahman, who felt himself in the same euphoria while getting married.
Rahman is the third Indian who won the Academy award after costume designer Bhanu Athaiya for her work in Gandhi in 1983 and the renowned director Satyajit Ray in 1992, for his lifetime achievement.
Slumdog Millionaire is the story of an 18-year-old "Jamal Malik" from the slums of Mumbai who participates in the game show "Who wants to be a Millionaire" where he answers correct to all questions-the questions which he had gone through in his life. He, however, is blamed to be cheating as a boy from such an impoverished background could not possibly possess the required knowledge necessary to win the top quiz show. Finally his truth triumphs and he is awarded "The Millionaire".
"Smile Pinki" directed by Emmy-award winning Megan Mylan is the tale of Mirzapur (Uttar Pradesh) girl and her fight against the social stigma of a cleft-lip, won the Oscar award for the Best Short Documentary.
