Thousands participate in Kolkata marathon

Kolkata, Feb 22 (ANI): Kolkata played host to the fifth open marathon on Sunday, which saw a record participation of people from all walks of life.

 

Kolkata city chief Gautam Mohan Chakrabarty flagged off the 42.2 kilometer run in the men's segment.

 

More than 20,000 participants took part in the marathon.

 

A wide cross-section of participants took part in the marathon. They included corporate executives, school children and physically challenged.

 

"We want people to be aware that fitness is a way of life and also we want to celebrate the spirit of the city of Kolkata," said Prochi Meheta, chairperson of the organizing committee.

 

The marathon, which is into fifth year now, has evoked considerable interest among sponsors and participants alike.

 

Former hockey player Gurbaksh Singh, who also took part in the marathon said, "I think it's very important to get people interested into sports and to be alive to the situation in India. I think it would be nice if more and more people start coming here and taking part in the marathon.

 

The prize money for the men's marathon was Rs. 3,20,000 and Rs. 1,20,000 for the women. (ANI)
