160 new Tamil schools to be built in Malaysia
Kuala Lumpur, Feb.17 (ANI): About 160 new Tamil schools will be built across Malaysia, while 50 or 60 more which are facing problems will be refurbished within a year, The Star reports.
Human Resources Minister and MIC secretary-general S. Subramaniam said this after attending a dinner for the Yong Peng Tamil School building fund organised by the party's Yong Peng division.
"The MIC will always act as the guardian of Tamil schools and will look into solving problems faced by them," Dr Subramaniam said.
He called on the Indian community to cast aside differences and work towards progress for the community because a united voice could be heard louder.
The Malaysia Nanban reported Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) Commissioner N. Sivasubramaniam as saying that Suhakam wanted to discuss with the Government the status of 40,000 refugees in the country.
Of this, about 7,000 were from Sri Lanka and they were mostly in refugee camps, while some were in detention camps after entering the country illegally.
He said most of the refugees had requested to be sent to Canada, Australia, Britain and the United States but the countries refused to accept them. (ANI)
