New Delhi, Sun, 15 Feb 2009 ANI

New Delhi, Feb 15 (ANI): In a bid to ensure maximum participation in the coming general elections, the Election Commission (EC) has directed the poll officials across the nation to simplify the electoral roll revision process.

In a letter to Chief Electoral Officers (CEO) of all the states and Union Territories, the Commission has asked for discontinuation of the practice of asking applicants to file affidavits in support of age or proof of residence.

It has also directed that those who furnish photocopy of documents should not be asked to compulsorily get them attested by a gazetted officer.

In such cases, poll officials can verify the photocopy with the original and put their remark as "verified and found true" with signature and date, the Election Commission said.

It also said that documents in the name of an immediate relation such as spouse, parents of the applicant should be relied on as the address proof.

The Commission had recently reviewed preparations for the Lok Sabha polls and simultaneous assembly polls in Orissa,Andhra Pradesh and Sikkim with leaders of political parties, Chief Secretaries and DGPs of all the states and Union Territories.(ANI)
