Mixed response to auctioning of Gandhi's belongings in Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad, Feb 13, (ANI): The followers of Mahatma Gandhi on Friday gave a mixed response to the move to auction some of his personal belongings in New York next month.
The sandals and metal-rimmed glasses of Mahatma Gandhi will be auctioned on March 4 - 5.
Sabarmati Gandhi Ashram managing trustee Amrutbhai Modi said, "There are his spectacles, pen and watch. Pen and watch he might have gifted to someone or might have reached through some other reasons. If anybody acquire it so why should we worry so much? He has done a lot for India but not to forget he was a world renowned figure." he auction includes Gandhi's pocket watch, metal rimmed and circular glasses footwear and some other belongings.
Some of the followers of Gandhi said they felt that the Government should take steps to stop the auctioning of the belongings.
One of the member of Sabarmati Ashram Jignesh Shukla said, "His spectacles are being auctioned next month, which is very wrong. Such things should not be commercialised. Commercialising items belonging to a person like him is not good. He has sacrificed his life for the country. Auctioning off such things is not called for." ccording to sources, the items now belong to a private American collector who obtained them from the Gandhi family's heirs. (ANI)
