India asks UN to put pressure on Pak to dismantle terrorism
In a move that could put more pressure on Pakistan to act sincerely against the Mumbai perpetrators, India urged United Nations to ensure Pakistan must fulfill its commitment to end terrorism originating from its soil.
External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said on Friday that he appraised the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who visited India to participate in the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit yesterday, about the details of the Mumbai strikes which were carried out by heavily armed gunmen, whose handlers are still in Pakistan, who sailed to India from Pakistan.
“I had detailed discussions with him in the context of the terror attack and the dossier we have handed over to Pakistan. We said that we have concrete evidence that suggests Pakistan based elements planned and launched the attack from its soil,” Mukherjee told journalists on the sidelines of a conference organized by the Research and Information System.
Mukherjee further said that we urged the secretary general to look into these aspects and ensure that Pakistan fully implements its commitments which it has given to India and the international community many times.
It is, however, difficult to say how UN would be effective to persuade Pakistan to clamp down on terrorism bearing in mind Pakistan’s misleading attitudes, which has a long history of cleverly dodges international pressure by inflicting temporary onslaught on militants until the focus shifts away.
Much talked about ‘drone attacks’ and ‘surgical strikes’ on Pakistan occupied Kashmir in a section of media in the wake of Nov 26/11 attacks, India, considering the attacks would not give the desired results instead might have adverse consequences, opted for diplomatic pressure on Pakistan to eliminate terrorism from its soil.
Since then India has been indulged in raising the ‘issue’ on various fronts to mount pressure on Pakistan by the international community to convince Pakistan, who has also been victim of terrorism but, on the other hand, have been sheltering terrorism, to finally crack down terrorism this time.
Urging UN, who is authorized to impose sanction against a country —economically, diplomatically or militarily, is just a policy of the Indian diplomacy to put international pressure on Pakistan.
For the first time, India has taken up the issue—Pakistan sponsored terrorism—with an iron hand. Instead of veiled warning, India has blamed Pakistan’s spy agency ISI (Inter Services Intelligence) directly for being involved in Mumbai attacks and exposed its covert relations with Pak-based terror elements having indulged in anti-India activities.
