New Delhi, Thu, 05 Feb 2009 NI Wire

In a move to enhance the quality of health care and to provide super specialty treatment to the insured persons, the Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) under the Labour and Employment Ministry has decided to set up 15 medical colleges and 13 postgraduate medical institutions in 19 subjects across the country.

The first such college would likely to come up in the next year while government will arrange the required staff soon for the super specialty hospitals, said Oscar Fernandes in an editors’ conference in the capital on Wednesday.

Moreover, the availability of most advanced hospital equipments and up-to-date facilities would also be ensured in the hospitals, added Fernandes.

After the establishment, there will be a major transformation in the services offered in the ESI hospitals and dispensaries, and government would examine that those facilities would reach to the ESI beneficiaries as well, he said.

Out of total intake seats, 40% of the students would come from respective state governments, 40% from remaining India and rest 20% seats would come in special reservation category, said the minister.

In special reservation category, 10% out of 20% quota will go to children of the insured employees, and five per cent each to children of the employers and the wards of ESIC staff, he added.

The Labour and Employment Ministry informed that the recruitment of teachers for those colleges has already begun and ministry is waiting for the consent of Medical Council of India.

ESIC is also planning to introduce a five-year service bond with students to tide over the present staff shortage at hospitals, it added.

At present, there are 144 hospitals, 42 annexes and 1,427 dispensaries under ESIC scheme in which 21 hospitals are directly run by ESIC while remaining are administered through the State governments. As much as 3.30 crores employees from organised sectors are benefiting from ESIC.
