Bangalore, Wed, 04 Feb 2009 ANI

Bangalore, Feb 4 (ANI): Veteran Bollywood actor Naseeruddin Shah has urged women victims of the recent pub attack in Mangalore to be courageous and protest against it.

Shah was talking to reporters here on Tuesday that women must come out and speak and should actually consider the larger issue.

"It will be a problem for them, but I think they should consider the larger issue. I don't think they'll face anything worse than what they have already faced. It is very easy for me to say that they should come up and speak. But I really think that they should be courageous enough to take this step," he said.Meanwhile, Nirmala Venkatesh, Member of the National Commission for Women, met Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa and asked him to set up a Women's Commission for the State as soon as possible.

"As there is no State Women's Commission here, I am asking Yediyurappa to constitute the State's Women Commission immediately. With immediate effect within 48 hours, the State Women's Chairperson should be appointed and the Commission should be constituted so that it will be useful," said Nirmala Venkatesh, member, National Commission for Women.

Yediyurappa, after attending a separate meeting in Bangalore said that no discussions have taken place regarding banning the Sri Ram Sena.

"In cabinet meeting, we never discussed such issue. So there is no question of banning Sri Rama Sena since it was never discussed," said Yediyurappa. It may be recalled that activists of Sri Rama Sena had barged into the lounge bar, abused the owner and customers and beat up the women customers, some with their courting spouses, even as they tried to run to safety.

At least four girls in the pub were chased out and hit by the self-appointed moral policing activists of Sri Ram Sena.

Congress party charged the BJP-run State Government with complicity in the attack, saying such acts could not have happened without the government's support. (ANI)
