Protestors smash bus screens in strike-hit Tamil Nadu

Chennai, Feb 4 (ANI): Protestors of various political parties, excluding the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), today smashed the window screens of some state-owned vehicles in strike-hit Tamil Nadu.

The strike was called to protest against the alleged killing of civilians in neighbouring Sri Lanka.

Police claimed that some unidentified persons had damaged windscreens of government buses in Coimbatore, Cuddalore, Tanjavur, Vellore, Dharmapuri, Tiruchirapalli, Dindigul and Tirunelveli. There were no reports of anyone being injured

About sixty percent of commercial establishments remained shut and vehicular traffic was thin.

The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) had warned the parties against going ahead with the strike, mentioning the Supreme Court's latest ruling that strikes are illegal and will be punished under the National Security Act (NSA).

Around 8,000 security personnel have been deployed across the state to prevent untoward incidents. (ANI)
