Chennai, Feb 3 (ANI): Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) urged both the Indian and Sri Lankan government to find a permanent solution to the ethnic crisis in northern Sri Lanka.
The party executive chaired by the Party President and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi adopted a resolution to this effect in Chennai on Tuesday.
The resolution asks for a ceasefire to protect the livelihood of Tamils in Sri Lanka. It also demands full devolution of powers and autonomy to the north and eastern provinces of the island.
The DMK has also decided to launch the Sri Lankan Tamils Welfare Forum to create awareness on the issues confronting Tamils in Sri Lanka by taking out rallies and organising public meetings in different parts of Tamil Nadu.
The State government has assured the party that it will support the general strike called by the Sri Lankan Tamils Protection Movement on Wednesday.
Armed security personnel will be deployed at vital locations across the State, including Central government establishments.
However, the functioning of schools will remain unhindered. (ANI)
