Punjab Health Minister offers to resign over incubator deaths

Patiala, Feb 2 (ANI): Punjab Medical Education and Research Minister Tikshan Sood has offered to quit owning moral responsibility for five incubator deaths.

 

The accidental fire in an incubator killed five newborns and injured another at a state-run hospital in Punjab on Saturday.

 

The accident occurred at Rajendra hospital in Patiala where the babies were being treated for jaundice in a special phototherapy machine using special lights.

 

Sood, who belongs to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), said he has sent in his offer to resign to his party.

 

"I am a soldier of the party, which made me a minister. Owning moral responsibility for the incident, I have sent my resignation to Balbir Punj, in-charge of BJP last evening," Sood said.

 

Police and hospital authorities said a short-circuit could have sparked the fire.

 

The babies were all less than a week old and had been fed by their mothers arely 20 minutes before the accident.

 

The local government has ordered an investigation. The families are being given about 2,050 dollars each as compensation. (ANI)
