Two days after the outrageous incident at a Mangalore pub by members of the Sri Ram Sena given us a reminiscence of the Talibani rule, a total of 25 persons have been detained so far, while at least 15 are at large. They will be produced in a local court later on Tuesday.

Also a right wing group’s top leader, Prasad Attavar, has been arrested after increasing pressure from various quarters. Attavar is currently being questioned by the police. While Pramod Mutthalik, the chief of the Sri Ram Sena is still at large.

However despite the nationwide outrage and growing anger, the state government has given even no indication to ban the group — who is also responsible for the assault against the Christians few months ago along with the Bajrang Dal.

The state government has given police a free hand to probe the unfortunate incident, and also formed a special squad to nab the other accused. The moot question is the gruesome incident many a times take place in presence of the police under the government’s nose but no appropriate action is taken against them who are more culpable than the perpetrators.

Whether it were Shiv Sena’s attempt to regulate moral behaviour by stopping those celebrating Valentine’s Day, even the police in Meerut also had acted once in the same manner, or the brutal beating of the north Indians by the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena just to gain political mileage, or the attack on South Indian actress Khushboo in 2005 by the Pattali Makkal Kakchi, a political party, for her comments on pre-marital sex are some of the incidents of an attempt to Talibanise India. And worst is instead of crackdown those fringe groups across the country, many a time police remain just as spectators.

The incident took place on Saturday night when a group of 40 men barged into a pub in Mangalore and started beating women who were celebrating weekend, dragging them by their hair and assaulting those who tried to intervene. The shocking incident occurred a day before country’s 60th Republic Day that questions how independent we are?

Remaining unapologetic Muthalik dubbed it only a small incident, saying in that pub women were indulging in obscenity, they were taking drugs… why is the media making it a big issue?

Hitting back at the Sena members, Renuka Chowdhary, Union minister of state for women and child development, said: “If they think they have the right to moral police, then I have even more right to police them. We have asked the National Commission for Women to go there... we will get a report from them.”

Chowdhary also attacked the Karnataka government for failing to stop attempts to Talibnise the country. She said that she would seek an explanation from the Karnataka government as well as self-styled Sri Ram Sena.

National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairman Girija Vyas said it was most shocking that culprits were themselves found “misbehaving and molesting” with the girls in the pub, alleging them behaving in an obscene manner.

After condemnation from the various quarters, state government has soon come into action. Chief Minister Yeddurappa said: “Nobody should take law into their hands. Government will take strict action against the culprits.” He said that police were being given a free hand to probe the very unfortunate incident.

The BJP’s central leadership also condemned the incident. Spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad too demanded the culprits be brought to book, however, said the culprits were neither from the BJP nor from the Sangh Parivar and so it would be worthless to attack BJP for this incident.

BJP president Rajnath Singh held a press conference in Bangalore and said “The BJP condemns the pub attack in totality.” He, however, expressed satisfaction over the state government's handling of the case.
