RCom launches GSM service in Delhi

New Delhi, Mon, 02 Feb 2009 NI Wire

Anil Ambani-led Reliance Communication or RCom on Sunday launched its GSM operation in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) after launching its service in Mumbai in January this year.

Last year RCom obtained GSM service license on PAN India basis and within a span of 11 months, the company spread its service in 11,000 towns across the country except Jammu and Kashmir (J&K).

RCom, popular for its incredible offers has hit the national capital market by offering another surprising introductory package including a lifetime validity in just Rs.49 as against its rivals’ offer of Rs.99 for the same.

Moreover, with a payment of Rs.51, customers can get a free talk time of five minutes per day up to 90 days translating 450-minutes of out going local calls. For unlimited night calls within Reliance network, customers would have to pay Rs.15 only.

The new subscription can be started by two packages: Rs.49 (in which customers will get life time validity and SIM) and Rs.115 that includes SIM, the lifetime validity, free talk time of 450-minutes on local connection and free-night-call pack.

To attract more and more customers from other networks, Reliance is also offering double talk value on every recharge amount. This offer is available till March 31, 2009.

In terms of network connection, RCom claims that Reliance network is stronger that its rivals those usually face congestion while with 850 already exiting Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) towers and 950 newly established GSM towers in Delhi, RCom offers enhanced network quality.

‘We have a total of around 1,800 towers in Delhi for the GSM services, and will take the number upward with increased necessity,’ said C S Rana, the regional head of RCom for Delhi, Haryana and Rajasthan circles.

RCom has launched its GSM service in pre-paid only while the post paid services are expected to be announced in the next two-three weeks, added Rana.

Delhi is already a mobile saturated city with a total of 12.4 million subscribers and not among the fastest growing markets in terms of new subscribers. However, the entry of RCom into GSM sector already having a strong CDMA subscriber base would be able to motivate the GSM customers to switch their operator, market experts believe.

In its third quarter review, RCom has reported a 2.7% increment in its profit and an addition of 5.3 million new subscribers in this quarter which has raised the total subscription base to 61.3 million by the end of December, 50 percent more than last year.
