India's Yuki wins junior Australian Open

Top seed Yuki Bhambri made his country proud Saturday after becoming the first junior Grand Slam winner beating unseeded German Alexandros-Ferdinandos Georgoudas in straight sets in the final of the Australian Open.

The 16-year-old Delhi lad Yuki looked pretty confident right from the very beginning of the match and outclassed his German opponent 6-3, 6-1 in 57 minutes.

With this emphatic win, Yuki succeeded in placing himself along side Ramesh Krishnan, the French and Wimbledon junior champ in 1979, and legendary Leander Paes, who won Wimbledon junior championship in 1990 and the US Open title in 1991.

An experienced Yuki, who had reached semi-final last year, though had not yet played against his German opponent, he did not give Georgousdas even a little bit of chance and broke his service in the fourth game of the opening set to go up 3-1 and then sealed the first set in 31 minutes. Yuki did not look back and finished the second set with 6-1 in just 26 minutes.

‘Being top-seeded in the tournament probably gives me extra motivation to do well in all the games because I know I am the favourite and probably one of the best right now in the world, so am actually enjoying it,’ said the flamboyant Yuki.

Today in another crucial final, third seeded Mahesh Bhupati partnering Knowles will take on the Bryan brothers Mark and Bob in the Australian Open men’s doubles final.
