Gwalior, Jan.26 (ANI): Twenty nine inmates, including 25 sentenced for life, were awarded freedom by the Madhya Pradesh government on the occasion of Republic Day here at the Central Jail of Gwalior.
The inmates' term was commuted on account of good behaviour.
Besides, the period of imprisonment for 1,608 male and 27 female prisoners was also commuted, ranging from a week to four months.
"Today is a day of celebration. The Madhya Pradesh Government announced the release of 29 prisoners. Out of 29 prisoners, 25 prisoners were undergoing life terms. The rest were undergoing imprisonment of smaller periods. They have all been released," said K. P. Srivastava, the superintendent of the Central Jail, Gwalior.
The freed jailbirds sang and danced on the occasion and bid farewell to their released jail mates.
"Under section 302, on 28/02/95 I was sentenced to life imprisonment. Now I am being released. I have already spent 14 years in jail and have been pardoned for the rest 20 years," said Ashok Sharma, a released prisoner. (ANI)
