Bhopal, Jan 26 (IANS) The Republic Day was celebrated amid tight security across Madhya Pradesh Monday with Governor Balram Jakhar unfurling the national flag at the Lal Parade ground in this state capital.
Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chohan led celebrations at Shahdol district and ministers in other districts.
The tricolour was unfurled at all government offices including the state, district and local administration offices and educational institutions.
Extra security measures were in place across the state since Sunday. Though there have been no specific threats from any quarters, posses of armed policemen were on guard at railway stations and important public and private venues besides combing operations and search at lodges and hotels.
In Bhopal, 2,500 personnel of district police along with nine companies of Special Armed Forces (SAF), the Rapid Action Force (RAF) and Special Task Force (STF) were deployed at all important and sensitive places, Superintendent of Police Jaideep Prasad said.
The entire area around the Lal Parade Ground was turned into a citadel and patrolling was intensified.
On the eve of the Republic Day, the Sudarshan Chakra Corps of the Indian army exhibited their weaponry prowess at the Bhopal Military station in Sultania Infantry Lines.
The weapons included tanks, infantry combat vehicles, artillery guns, anti-aircraft guns, engineering vehicles and radars.
Military bands and demonstration of an anti-terrorist operation by specially trained Baaz Force of the state police were the other highlights of the function.
Governor Jakhar presided over the function and Chief Minister Chouhan was the special guest.
