Bhupathi-Knowles reach Australian Open quarters

Melbourne, Jan 26 (IANS) Mahesh Bhupathi of India and Mark Knowles of Bahamas Monday moved into the Australian Open doubles quarterfinal with a straight set victory over Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador and Tommy Robredo of Spain.

 

Third-seeded Bhupathi and Knowles won 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 10 minutes at the Melbourne Park here. The India-Bahamas pair broke their opponents once to take the first set in 30 minutes.

 

 

In the second set, they converted two of the four break points. Lapentti and Robredo broke once but then ran out of steam.

 

 

Bhupathi and Knowles will next meet Spain's Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco, who knocked out Argentina's Lucas Arnold Ker and Juan Monaco 6-2, 5-7.

 

 

Among juniors, Kaza Vinayak Sharma beat Patrk Brydolf of Sweden 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the second round of boys singles. He meets Justin Eleveld of the Netherlands.

 

 

Another Indian, Sudarwa Sitaram, lost to Pierre-Huques Herbert of France 3-6, 4-6.

 

 

In the girls singles, India's challenge ended with Kyra Shroff losing to Czech Monika Turnova 0-6, 3-6.

 

 

Yuki Bhambri and Liang-Chi Huang of Taiwan advanced to the boys doubles second round with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Gabriel Dias of Brazil and German Sanchez Delfin of Mexico.

 

 

Ronak Manuja and Kaza Vinayak Sharma of India lost to Australians Luke Saville and Jack Schipanski 6-7 (1), 0-6 while Sudarwa Sitaram of India and Toni Androic of Croatia went down to seventh seed Francis Caey Alcantara of the Philippines and Cheng-Peng Hsieh of Taiwan 3-6, 4-6.

 

 

In the girls doubles first round, Kyra Shroff and Eugenie Bouchard of Canada got a walkover against Ema Burgic of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Chanel Simmonds of Russia after winning the first set 6-1.

 

 

Tanvi Shah and Rashmi Teltumbde went down fighting against American Ester Goldfeld and Hannah Jones of Britain 4-6, 6-7 (5).
