Areshchenko continues his winning run at Gurgaon chess

Gurgaon, Jan 24 (IANS) Top seed Alexander Areshchenko of Ukraine continued his winning ways and defeated India's Ashwin Jayaram in the fourth round of the Gurgaon International Open Grand Master Chess Tournament here Saturday.

Playing white side of Sicilian defence, Areshchenko overcame his Indian International Master rival in 48 moves.

Meanwhile, second seed Yuriy Kuzubov signed the peace treaty after 20 moves against Grandmaster norm holder International Master S.P Sethuraman while Kazakh Grandmaster Anuar Ismagambetov settled for the same result against International Master Saptarshi Roy in just six moves.

In a major upset of the day, playing black side of French Defence Advanced variation, International Master P.D.S. Girinath outwitted Uzbek Grandmaster Saidali Iuldachev in 35 moves at the tournament being held at the Suncity World School.

Meanwhile, as many as five players, including Bangladesh Grandmaster Niaz Murshed, who halted the dream run of Saravana Krishnan in the fourth round, came out unscathed in the first four rounds to share the lead with a cent percent score.

Among the Indian Grandmasters, former national champion Abhijit Kunte settled for a half point against R. Premnath while Praveen Thipsay and Magesh Chandran defeated Arjun Tiwari and R. Balasubramaniam respectively in the fourth round encounters.

With six rounds still to come in the Rs.1 million prize money tournament, as many as 18 players are trailing behind the leaders with a drift of half point.
