New terminal of Thiruvananthapuram airport to open in June
Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 24 (IANS) The new terminal of the Thiruvananthapuram international airport will open in June, Civil Aviation secretary M. Madhavan Nambiar said Saturday.
'The work is progressing fast. It would be over by May and the terminal will become operational in June,' Nambiar told reporters after inspecting the work underway at the airport.
The present terminal can only cater to about 500 passengers at a time. The new terminal would be able to handle up to 800 passengers.
The new terminal is a tubular three-storied fully air-conditioned building with a floor area of 20,000 sq meters and would provide wi-fi connectivity to passengers.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had laid the foundation stone for the terminal on Nov 1, 2006 after the Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs Sept 2006 approved the Rs.2.5 billion project.
