Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh will undergo coronary artery bypass graft surgery on Saturday at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. He has already been admitted in the hospital for pre-surgery tests.

The surgery would be performed by a team of doctors drawn from AIIMS and the Asian Heart Institute, Mumbai.

They would be supported by a team of doctors and technical staff drawn from other departments of AIIMS.

Singh, 76, was earlier admitted to AIIMS on Tuesday for cardiac check-ups after complaining of chest pain. It was found after a series of medical evaluation that his coronary arteries were partially blocked.

Dr. Singh had undergone bypass surgery in the UK earlier in 1990 and an angioplasty in the Escorts Heart Institute in 2004. Singh is also a diabetic and has been undergoing routine medical checkups.

After the operation it would take four to six weeks time to recover from the operation. Hence, it is obvious he will miss the Republic Day parade and may join the work by mid March. During his absence, Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee is likely to preside over the Cabinet meetings.
