Supreme Court to hear Maharashtra Government stay plea on 'Deshdrohi' case

New Delhi, Fri, 23 Jan 2009 ANI

New Delhi, Jan 23 (ANI): An appeal filed by the Maharashtara Government on Thursday seeking a stay on the film 'Deshdrohi' will be heard by the Supreme Court today.

The appeal was filed in the wake of escalating tensions in Mumbai following the violent anti-north Indian campaign fanned by the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena.

Considering the urgency of the matter, a bench headed by Justice BN Aggarwal will look into the appeal on the ban of the movie scheduled for release on Friday.

Maharashtra Chief Minister, Ashok Chavan said that the state does not need any more provocation for violence after the 26/11 terror attacks.

Solicitor General G E Vahanvati informed that the appeal comprises a "clear intelligence report" that the release of the film might increase tensions in the region.

Mentioning the intelligence report warning of a probable large-scale uncontrollable violence due to the film, Vahanvati condemned the high court for ignoring the vital reports.

"Deshdrohi" has been produced by Kamal Khan, a Bhojpuri actor, who has cast himself in the lead. It is about a small-town migrant who comes to Mumbai in search of a job and and faces problems due to a bias in the city towards immigrants from North India.

The Bombay High Court, on January 9, had agreed to stall the release of the movie.(ANI)
