Don't block people to people contact: Asma Jahangir

National, Thu, 22 Jan 2009 IANS

New Delhi, Jan 22 (IANS) Asma Jahangir, chairperson of Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, Thursday said the people to people contact between India and her country should not be hindered under any circumstance.

Jahangir is leading a Pakistani delegation, which is on a 'peace mission' to India, that includes human right activists, journalists, educationists and politicians. The delegation crossed over to India from the Wagah border Wednesday.

During its stay in India, the delegation will push efforts to defuse tensions between the two countries in the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks Nov 26, which New Delhi blamed on Pakistani elements who sailed into Mumbai from Karachi.

'We are here today with a message of peace. War is never a solution. What we need this time is better co-operation between the two nations,' said Jahangir as she also acknowledged the surging public anger in India after Mumbai carnage.

She was speaking at a function at the Ashoka Hotel here.

Admitting that Pakistan has an unskilled government at present, Jahangir praised the Indian government for practising restraint after the Mumbai attacks, which left over 170 people dead.

'We want to congratulate Indian Prime Minister (Manmohan Singh) and the government for practicing restraint,' she said.

Congress spokesperson Jayanti Natrajan said: 'Public opinion in India has changed drastically after the Mumbai attack and I wonder if it's any more under our control. What is even more sad is that young people are very angry today.'
