Governor visits freedom fighters in Chandigarh
Chandigarh, Jan 22 (IANS) A group of freedom fighters living in this city had a pleasant surprise when Punjab Governor and Chandigarh?s Administrator Gen. (retd) S.F. Rodrigues visited their homes Thursday.
Most of the freedom fighters whom the governor and his wife Jean Rodrigues met were in their eighties. The couple also interacted with the families, especially grandchildren, of the freedom fighters.
The freedom fighters shared with them their memories of the Independence struggle as the governor and his wife spent time with them and listened to their problems.
'People in our country should draw inspiration from the sacrifices made by our freedom fighters, which has enabled us to take the country on the path of progress and prosperity,' former Indian Army chief Rodrigues said.
The freedom fighters were equally appreciative of the governor?s gesture to meet them ahead of the Republic Day Jan 26.
'It is a nice gesture on their part to come and meet us and also to listen to our problems,' freedom fighter Munish Sharda said.
The problems highlighted by the freedom fighters included medical facilities and implementation of welfare schemes for them.
